A Pinteresting Wednesday

It's Pinterest time... LOVE Wednesday!

I've got pins of ALL kinds this week...
from teaching ideas to recipes, from teacher humor to home decorating. I've been a pinning fool in between trying to get my classroom ready and prepping lessons for the first weeks back to school. I just can't seem to stay away from Pinterest.

What have you been pinning this week?

Wednesday: Lovin' It and Pinnin' It

It's my favorite day of the bloggy week, all because of...

Today I'm linking up with Covered with Glitter and Glue for What I'm Loving Wednesday and with The Vintage Apple for Oh How Pinteresting! Wednesday.

I am lovin' this last day of vacation! Yep, tomorrow will be my first day in the classroom. Mind you, this is an unofficial start to my school year. The official start is Staff/Faculty Report Day on the 19th, but my school year begins when I start working on my classroom and that's tomorrow! Actually, I can't wait to get started. I've got some really cute and useful things to decorate with this year and I'm anxious to get it going. Pictures promised for Snapshot Saturday this week!

I am also lovin' that I found a TON of really good, simple, and easy recipes on Pinterest this week. I love having my family over for dinner. During the summer it's easy to cook whatever I like. I'm home all day and can fuss. However, once school is in full-swing, it becomes difficult to cook unless it's made in the crockpot (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my crockpot). Here are just a few of the taste-tempting crockpot recipes I pinned this week.

Don't they sound yummy? I know... most of them are for chicken, but my family LOVES chicken! Can't wait to try them out.

Finally, I'm lovin' some giveaways! There have been some really awesome giveaways this summer and I've been the recipient of several wonderful products. My bloggy friend Heather at Peacocks and Penguins is kicking off a 300 Follower Celebration. Stop by for a chance to win some terrific teaching resources. She is giving away 4 different packages for a total of 25 prizes. WOWIE!

Lovin', Pinnin', and Playin' Games (a FREEBIE)

It's another tri-linky day. Today I'm linking up with Glitter and Glue for What I'm Loving Wednesday, with The Vintage Apple for Oh How Pinteresting!, and with The Teacher's Chair for the week long School Linky.

This Wednesday I am LOVIN' the weather in NE Ohio. We had struggled through excessive heat and excessive rain for most of June and early July. Now we are having EXCESSIVEly beautiful sunshine and moderate temps in the mid-70's. GORGEOUS!

I'm also lovin' the fact that I can now pin on the TpT collaborative boards on Pinterest. How fun is that! And speaking of pinning. I started three new boards this month, one for each of three books that I'll be using with my students during the first weeks of school: The Coffin Quilt by Ann Rinaldi, Underground by Jean Ferris, I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic by Lauren Tarshis. I've been collecting photos, videos, newspaper clippings, etc. and pinning them to my boards... everything in place for when I am working on lesson assignments, Power Points, Prezis, Sqworls, and instaGroks, and in the process I've been learning lots about Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, the relationship of quilting to slavery, the passengers on the Titanic, and more... lovin' it!

Finally... Lovin' one of my all time favorite classroom games

EEEEEEEEEW!
A Whole Class Game to Review/Practice Science Vocabulary

Divide the class into 3-4 teams of nearly equal size.

Similar to Kaboom, Kerplop, Boom, or whatever you call this type of game, students randomly draw strips from a container, sight unseen, read the word on the strip, discuss the meaning with teammates, and then respond by stating the definition aloud. If the student is correct, the team keeps the strip. If the student is incorrect, the strip is returned to the container.

At the end of a specified amount of time, play stops and the team with the greatest number of strips is declared the winner.

But there’s a twist… Inside the container are several cards with the interjection EWWWWWWWW! on them. If a student draws this card, the team must return all of their strips to the container as well as the EEEEEEEEEW! card.

You can download a set of strips for vocabulary for The Five Kingdoms of Living Organisms EWWWWWWWW! by clicking HERE or on the graphic below.

Tips
·   Use a Pringle’s can for your container. Cover it with colorful paper and add a label with the game’s name on it. Better yet, design a label on your computer.
·   Make several sets of words for various concepts. Store them in envelopes/plastic bags on which the game and concept are written.
·   Using a word processing program, utilize the table feature to easily make strips.
·   Use this game idea for all subject areas but give it a different name. For example EEEEEEEEEEW! for Science, Kaboom for Language Arts, and Kerplop for Math.

Lovin' and Pinnin' Wednesday

I've said it before and I'll say it again... I LOVE WEDNESDAYS! I get to blog about Pinterest and talk about things that I love. What could be better?

This week I am LOVIN' my new home laminator. I took the plunge after reading so many of my bloggy friends extol the virtues of their machines. I really didn't want to spend the money, but the laminator at school is on the fritz and it doesn't look like it will be fixed anytime too soon. I dug in my drawer and found a slew of Barnes and Noble gift cards... we used to have a B&N store in town before the recession and e-readers became popular. I had over 200 hundred dollars worth of certificates so I ordered my laminator and 100 sheets of film and didn't have to spend a dime! LOVIN' that especially!

The laminator arrived last Saturday and has been working hard ever since. So hard that there are only 30 sheets of film left. I ordered another 300 sheets with the rest of the gift certificates today. Here is my new toy working away at laminating my monster/polka dot themed word wall cards and CCSS "I Can" Statements. LOVIN' it!

I'm LOVIN' this idea from Pinterest. I think it is one of the easiest and most clever ideas I've seen. I'm working on customizing a mini-office for my 5/6th grade Language Arts students in my polka dot/monster theme.

You can visit the original site HERE.

I'm LOVIN' these behavior beads from Run! Miss Nelson's Got the Camera. My sixers would go WILD over them!

You can visit the original site HERE.

I am LOVIN' that I got many TpT items completed this week.

You can view the original site HERE.

I'm also LOVIN' that so many of my bloggy friends are celebrating giveaways this week. Please stop by their blogs for chances to win some awesome teaching resources and terrific gifts.

Kristin over at Teach n' Tex is hosting a 3x3 Giveaway. What you see here is just part of it!

Desiree over at Kinders on the Block is celebrating her second blogiversary.

Jessica from Joy in the Journey has a blogiversary in the works as well!

Oh How Pinteresting, What I Love Wednesday!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Wednesdays! I get to blog about Pinterest and talk about things that I love... what could be better?

I'm really LOVIN' my new windows and air conditioning unit. I had a behemoth a/c unit stuck in my living room. It blocked the light, making it dingy and dark in there. This past week the old window unit was removed, a brand new window installed, and a portable a/c unit brought in... my clever contractor actually vented the new a/c unit through the wall so it's technically not portable. I also had a brand new kitchen window installed. The old window NEVER opened; this one does, and a wonderful breeze constantly blows through the kitchen... ah, heaven! And four new glass block windows were installed in the basement that let light and air through... no more musty smell!!!!!

And now for this Wednesday's pins... most of which are for decorating a classroom... the first one is something I made.

Isn't this cute?

Something I made this week to offer in my TpT Store...

And finally a couple just for fun...

What are you loving this week? What have you pinned? Don't forget to visit the fun linky parties at the top of this post.

OHP and What I'm Loving Wednesday!

I've always loved Wednesdays! I'm not sure why? Maybe it's because it's the middle of the work week and it's all downhill, smooth sailing into the weekend. But, it's summer, sooooo why do I love Wednesday? There are two super cool linkies held on Wednesdays.

PINTEREST... Love, Love, Love! Can get lost there for hours. Can pin, and, pin, and pin.... anything, and everything, especially teaching related items.

Here are this week's gems from Pinterest:

MY NEW ERIN CONDREN PLANNER... It came yesterday. I wasn't sure about the purchase. Could I justify the price? Especially in lieu of all the utility increases I was hit with this month (adjustment of budget payments... arrggh!). It is DEFINITELY worth it! I LOVE it!

The Power Points I've Added to My TpT Store... I've used these items in my gr. 6 science classes for several years. I decided to add them to my store inventory this summer, but I had to modify them a bit. All of the presentations included inserted videos. I had to change the insertions to hyperlinks. I also had to depersonalize them a bit. I LOVE how they turned out. Here's a bit of a preview for Cells and Heredity.

What are you pinning this Wednesday? What are you LOVIN'?

It's Wednesday; Let's Get Pinteresting and Blog Hoppin'

My bloggy friends know by now that I am crazy for Pinterest and love linking up with Michelle over at The Vintage Apple each week for her Pinterest linky. I'm not sure why I love Pinterest so much. I think it might have something to do with my love of researching and an extremely short attention span. I can search my little heart away, click it and pin it, and be off to another website or idea in a flash. The problem now is that I've managed to accumulate so many pins (and they are ALL good ones) that I have a hard time remembering what I pinned or where the pin I want is located. I'll solve that problem sometime in the future!

One problem that I have been working on this week is sorting the files I've stored on my computer. I am a LOVER of all things The Education Center, especially Mailbox Magazine (I've been a subscriber for more than 25 years) and its email newsletters. The newsletters have accumulated in a specially created file in my mail program since late 2010... mind you, some of them arrive on a weekly basis... that's a LOT of newsletters! I spent most of this past Monday sorting through these newsletters. Many were outdated, the links no longer available, but those that were... well, some were saved, some were thrown out, some were downloaded, and some were even pinnable.

Here we go... a week for The Education Center pins!

Not only am I pinning away, I'm also blog hopping. Tori over at Tori's Teacher Tips has create a Bloglovin' Blog Hop linky for all of us who are moving over to Bloglovin'. Through the blog hop we can find the blogs we've been following and a whole bunch more! Let's all get hoppin'.

Another Pinteresting/Workshop Wednesday

I've been busy pinning yet again this week... no theme this time, just quite an eclectic collection. I did notice, however, that many of my pins are returning to teaching ideas... geez, it's only the second week of summer break... LOL!

I love frames and borders, plus a little shout-out to Christy...

An idea that can be adapted for other curricular areas...

My sixers will LOVE this one...

I can't wait to try this one...

Must make for the first day back to school...

Clever and inexpensive idea...

YUM!!!!!!

And one just for fun...

It's Wednesday so...

It's time for Pinteresting posts. This week it was all about blog bling: new fonts, frames, backgrounds, papers, etc. Here's a sampling of the myriad items I pinned:

The problem is that I find sooooo many wonderful fonts, backgrounds, frames, and pieces of clip art that I don't have the time or space to find them after I download them, let alone be able to use them. Anyone have organization suggestions?

What's Pinteresting this Wednesday?

This week I've been pinning pretty pictures. I just kept running into interesting photographs. I often use these photos as writing prompts for my fifth and sixth grade students. I project the photograph onto my SmartBoard or large screen TV, direct the kiddos' writing to a particular skill or writer's craft, and off they write quietly for 15 minutes. They keep these ROUGH drafts in their Language Arts journals and return to them when they need to "publish" a piece. Here are some of the photos I found this week...I just LOVE them!!!

What did I pin this week? More like what didn't I pin this week? It's quite an eclectic bunch of ideas.

Don't miss this one:

And if these haven't been enough, just check out my right sidebar. I installed a new Pinterest widget that shows what my latest pins are...

Ah, heck, just go see ALL my pins... LOL!

It's Wednesday; Must Be Pinterest Time!

I have to laugh at myself AGAIN... well, actually, I do this A LOT! It's about Pinterest, you see. In my area of the U.S. we pronounce PINTEREST as "pin-tuh-rest" which sounds a little like "pin to rest." That's what makes me laugh... 'cause I do anything but rest when it comes to pinning! I've been VERY busy again this week, finding all kinds of shabby chic STUFF to keep me busy over the summer. Here's a sampling:

And then, just because I LOVE these two, so close to home...

And now, oh my goodness! I just read in an email message this morning that Pinterest is improving its pins! Be still my heart! A better Pinterest? I will never get off of this machine!

Oh How Pinteresting... Summer Break is Coming!

My attention span is shortening just as the daylight is increasing. It's hard for me to keep my attention on job-related things. My lesson plans are getting scarcer, graded papers are getting fewer while the ungraded pile is getting larger... but learning and teaching continues... for 16 days, not counting weekends. Pinteresting, on the other hand, is increasing. LOL! However,  my pins are taking on the look of home projects instead of teaching projects. Here are just a few of this week's pins:

Wait a minute! Summer break? It looks like I'm pinning WORK! Maybe I'd better stay away from Pinterest! NAH!

Here's another, but DEFINITELY just for fun!!

Yet again... Pinterest and a FREEBIE!!!

I am crazy about Pinterest!!! It's gotten to the point that both my fifth and sixth graders will ask if the idea I am sharing with them came from Pinterest. I'm crazy to the extent that I've begun creating some "worksheets" featuring Pinterest boards.

Here's one I just finished that is a book report. It's actually part of a set of Social Media Book Reports that I'm offering in my TpT Store and Teacher's Notebook Shop. The complete set of book reports contains not only the Pinterest design, but also designs for an iPod, Facebook, and Muzy. My sixers have really liked doing these reports. They are just as crazy about social media as I am, maybe more... NAH!

You can download the Pinterest FREEBIE HERE or by clicking on the graphic.

Here are just a few things I've been pinning this week. It's a little bit of this and a little bit of that...

Teach Junkie Creative Ideas

April 30, 2013

Page Poetry and Pinterest

Teach Junkie

WOOT, WOOT! Just found out: This idea was featured on the Top 5 Ideas of the Week (May 6, 2013) over at Teach Junkie! So happy! Thanks, Leslie!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

During the month of April my sixers and I have been reading, writing, and ENJOYING poetry! What began as groans after Spring break has turned into eager cries of "What kind of poem are we gonna do today, Ms. A.?"

So far we've enjoyed highly formalized poems such as haiku, tanka, and diamonte; explored rhyme scheme with couplets, quatrains, limericks, and clerihew; and giggled, laughed, and been left speechless by free verse and dada.  "What is dada?" you say. Hmmm? Better than I trying to explain this most unusual poetry format, try your hand at a dada poem here:

A poem similar to dada is a Page Poem. I had never seen this type of poetry until I stumbled upon it on Pinterest. Pinterest? Ah, what would I do without Pinterest? Here's what I pinned about Page Poetry.

I absolutely fell in LOVE with Page Poetry. Crazy and deviant as dada, Page Poetry calls for great visual creativity, not something added as an after thought, but art that is essential to the meaning (if you can call it that) of the poem. Some Page Poems appeared to be random ramblings of strange, twisted minds while others appeared well thought out and planned. I can do this, I thought! My sixers can do this! And so they did and with great fun, great thought, great sharing, and great discussion.

I introduced Page Poetry to my sixers by sharing my Pinterest Pins and visiting some of the websites. Fresh from creating dada poems, they were hooked and couldn't wait to begin. Next we began looking through our library for a book that might lend itself to creativity and fun. It also had to be a book that was well loved, meaning it was ready to fall apart. We hit the jackpot with an old copy of one of the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books. With some sadness at having to destroy the book, I ceremoniously began tearing out pages at random and passing them to my sixers with great dramatic flair. From there my sixers spent quite some time reading and rereading their given page, searching for just the right words.

Once the words were chosen, they had to decide how to present their poems, how elaborate would the page appear? Some simply used black pens to circle the words and draw directional lines, some added color, others added textured lines, while others utilized multiple colors, shapes, and designs.

These are just a very few of the Page Poems created by my students. Enjoy!

Fonts, Frames, and Frou Frous: Oh, How Pinteresting Wednesday!

I LOVE fonts! I LOVE frames! I LOVE digital FROU FROUS! As a result I spend a LOT of time surfing from blog to blog and website to website in search of unique, cute, special items that I can use to make teaching aids.

I think I have several hundred fonts installed on this computer and another several hundred on the computer at school and another hundred or so on the computer upstairs. Get the picture? I have a digital frame collection that an art museum would envy! And paper backgrounds? Well, it takes me a LOOOONG time to pick out something when I want to design a worksheet, sign, greeting card, etc.

Pinterest is definitely a source to feed my addiction. I'm chuckling a bit as I key in this blog post because what could've taken me just a few minutes has been more than an hour in the making. Why? When I visited my font and frou frou board I just HAD to start looking through the pins, visiting the sites, and downloading and installing more goodies. LOL!

Here's a GREAT board for all you fontaholics and digital design divas. Bet ya can't pin just ONE!
